Trial By Fire

By Shannon Michael Jones

Have you ever found yourself asking, “Why is this happening to me?” Maybe you’ve prayed fervently, begged God for answers, and yet the hardship only deepened. It felt like the more you sought Him, the more intense the storm became. In those moments, it’s easy to believe you’re being punished, or worse, that God has turned His back on you. You feel worn down, discouraged, and ready to give up.

But take heart—God has not abandoned you.

What you are experiencing may not be punishment, but Trial by Fire.

What is a Trial by Fire?

A Trial by Fire is a refining process allowed by God, where you endure intense hardship, pain, or suffering. It is not meant to destroy you, but to test, purify, and strengthen your faith and character. Just as gold is purified in a blazing furnace, your faith is being tested and strengthened through the fire. These trials, though painful, have a divine purpose. They shape your character and deepen your dependence on the Lord.

You are not alone in the fire. God is right there with you—working in ways you can’t yet see. He’s molding you for a greater purpose, preparing you for something far beyond what you could ever imagine.

Shaping Your Character

Romans 5:3-5 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

God molds your character in many ways—through life experiences, unexpected challenges, and even deep suffering. These moments are not random; they are tools in the hands of a loving Father who desires to see you grow in faith, wisdom, and strength.

Your response to these trials—whether in faith, fear, anger, or surrender—plays a crucial role in how your character is shaped. Will you allow the fire to refine you, or will you let it consume your hope? Each hardship has a way of revealing what’s really inside of you—your strengths, your weaknesses, your trust in God, or your tendency to rely on yourself.

By allowing you to go through the trial, God is not condemning you—He’s revealing the condition of your heart. He’s showing you where your faith stands and where it needs to grow. And as you persevere, lean on His promises, and choose to trust Him even when it hurts, something powerful happens: you emerge stronger, more grounded, and more Christlike than before.

The fire is not meant to break you. It’s meant to build you.

Growing Your Dependence on God

Proverbs 3:5-6 5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

A Trial by Fire doesn’t just shape your character—it deepens your relationship with the Lord. In seasons of hardship, when all your strength is spent and your understanding runs dry, you are drawn into a place of complete reliance on God. It’s there, in the fire, that you learn to trust Him not because you understand His plan, but because you know His heart.

God often allows trials so that you stop leaning on your own strength and start leaning entirely on Him. He has a divine purpose for your life—one that only you can fulfill—but to walk in that purpose, He needs your surrender, not your self-reliance. It’s not about how talented, prepared, or qualified you are. God isn’t looking for your ability—He’s looking for your availability.

When you make yourself available to Him—through obedience, trust, and a surrendered heart—He equips you with everything you need. He opens the right doors, gives you wisdom and courage, and strengthens you for the journey ahead. But it all begins with dependence. Not partial, not occasional—complete dependence.

Let go of the need to control, and let God lead. Trust Him in the uncertainty, obey Him in the waiting, and surrender fully to His will. When you do, He will show you the way—one step at a time, one promise at a time, and always in perfect timing.

Understand this: the trials you face are not signs of God’s punishment—they are divine tools of refinement. The purpose of these fiery seasons is to bring about spiritual growth, deeper dependence on God, and a transformation of your heart. You are not alone in the fire—God is right there with you, just as He was with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the blazing furnace. The fire did not consume them, and it will not consume you. It is shaping you. It is sanctifying you. It is teaching you to rely fully on the Lord.

God often uses adversity to peel away your self-reliance, showing you how much you truly need Him. He doesn’t allow the fire to destroy you, but to draw you closer, to strengthen your faith, and to make you more like Christ.

Take a moment to reflect:

Have you ever gone through a season of suffering or trial that left you broken or confused?

How did you respond in that moment of weakness or fear?

What did God teach you about your own heart, your faith, or your trust in Him?

Did the trial lead you to a deeper relationship with Him?

The next time you find yourself in a Trial by Fire, resist the urge to take control. Surrender fully to God’s will. Let go of your need for answers, and trust the One who holds your future. This surrender opens the door to divine direction. Remember, God is not asking for your ability—He’s asking for your availability. If you make yourself available, He will provide all the ability, strength, and grace you need.

When the fire has passed and your heart is fully yielded, you’ll discover something Glorious:

God brings beauty from the ashes, strength from the struggle, and purpose from the pain.

You will not come out the same. You will emerge renewed, strengthened, wiser, and closer to the heart of God than you’ve ever been before.

The fire may be fierce, but the One who walks with you is always faithful.
